The Hairdressers

We are The Hairdressers. Robyn Steward plays trumpet, sometimes through effects and sometimes with a mute. Kathy Hulme plays cello, sometimes with a cucumber. We play free improvised music, this means we make it up as we go along.

We did our first gig in January 2018 at Robyn’s Rocket at Sister Midnight Records (formerly Vinyl) Deptford.

In May 2018 we supported the Bitchin’ Bajas at Cafe Oto which led to Robyn being offered the chance to put on Robyn’s Rocket in September.

In April 2019 we’re going to Glasgow to play at the Counterflows festival http://www.counterflows.com/

In November 2019 we’ll be performing at the last Robyn’s Rocket of 2019, the final gig of a 3 gig residency spanning the year.

Kathy Hulme

I met Robyn through mutual friends. I started to teach her Kodály musicianship, she found it quite slow. When she got bored one or other of us would suggest that we jam together. Gradually the jams took over and we started playing gigs together.

Kathy used to play with the Honkies, the Smartbombs and the C-siders. She also plays in a trio with Michael Roberts and Karina Townsend: The Department of Internal
Affairs.

Robyn Steward

Played trumpet as a kid but gave up age 15, got inspired by big band jazz age 27 and met Andy Diagram (James, Spaceheads, David Thomas the the 2 pale boys) and got inspired, met Kathy and found they clicked musically.
