Adapting environments and practice to be Autism Friendly
Covering the key considerations for adapting or creating autism friendly environments, and what good autism friendly practice looks like.
Behaviour
Sometimes Autistic people are described to have challenging behaviour or behaviour that challenges those around them. In this session you will learn the wide areas of behaviour that may be given this label, learn to use tools like an ABC chart to understand what the behaviour may be communicating and how you can implement strategies to better support the person.
Making the most of communication
Communication can be a key area of difficulty for many Autistic people. Some people speak, some people are non-speaking, but there are lots of ways of support communication both to the autistic person and understanding their communication, this course introduces the concept of communication passports.
Mental Health and autism: an introduction
This is an introductory course for people supporting Autistic people. Aimed towards support workers rather than mental health professionals, (who are still welcome). We cover common mental health conditions Autistic people experience, how autism might affect the presentation and what tools may work. You will come away with key strategies to help people to manage anxiety.
Sensory Experiences
What sensory issues are, how they effect Autistic people, and how you can support them. You will learn to identify common sensory issues, know what a sensory profile is, and be able to perform a basic sensory audit.
Person centred approaches to incorporating special/intense interests in a person care plan
A special / intense interest is an interest a person is deeply focused on. It is sometimes just used as a reward but can be incorporated into a person care plan.
Personal budgets
This explores the use of a personal budget or direct payments for Autistic people.
Work
This topic covers the common issues Autistic people face when trying to obtain employment and maintain it. In the UK, only 16% of Autistic adults in the UK are in employment (according to the National Autistic Society). Autistic people need support in this area that addresses the common issues they experience, such as difficulties reading body language, how to interrupt interview questions etc. This course identifies common issues and gives you tools and strategies.
