<image:title>New Page - NAS PROFESSIONAL award for outstanding ACHIEVEMENT by a individual on the autism spectrum.</image:title>
<image:caption>Age 20 I was raped , this is sadly a common occurrence in the autism community ( however it doesn't and shouldn’t be) , through this experience I came into contact with other autistic people who had had similar experiences to me, I did not want to preach at them, and instead chose to try and understand where the differences in terms of venerability were between autistic and non autistic women. As part of my work with CRAE and UCL I did a online survey ion 100 autistic women and 100 non autistic women. I asked them questions about their experiences in areas of life like friendship. I found what is now being published in research papers that a lot of autistic people have been sexually abused, manipulated and harmed by others. Having had a number of years as a mentor in a wide range of settings I had some strategies that had helped me and other people , and I built up a group of professionals ( so I could check none of my ideas seemed unrealistic) and wrote a book aiming to give as much explanation as I could ( If I didn’t understand something I checked with non autistic people who had better social skills then me), and that is how my first book came out “ the independent woman’s handbook for super safe living on the autistic spectrum”. in 2015 I was nominated and was joint awardee of the NAS professional award for outstanding achievement by a individual on the autism spectrum, for my work in raising awareness around sexually abuse against autistic people .</image:caption>

<image:title>New Page - Shaw trust power 100 list of most INFLUENTIAL disabled people 2018</image:title>
<image:caption>For 10 years I have volunteered with the NAS (National Autistic Society) as a media talker/ambassador. When a media enquiry comes into the press office at the NAS they need a pool of people they can call to go on TV. Many Autistic people particularly find live TV (as its so short notice and can be changed and not scripted at any time) difficult, so when they need someone who can handle that they give me a call, I’m also used when journalists want someone like me i.e. woman in her 30’s, single, self employed, diagnosed in childhood - it can be that specific, In addition to this I have been co-author on a number of academic papers. The ones I lead on all stem from needs within the community. I’m also in a number of books including Autism West Midlands ‘Ultra Violet Voices’, a EU funded project ‘Autism in Pink’ and interviewed in ‘Auto Power’. My second book ‘The Autism Friendly Guide to Periods’ came out in 2019. I have a reputation for taking on topics in an accessible way. In 2017 I was nominated and then in 20178 nominated and added to the Shaw Trust’s Power 100 list of most influential disabled people for my work in media and publishing.</image:caption>

      <image:title>My story - High School</image:title>
<image:caption>The SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) was very good at planning the transition from primary to secondary school. My big fear had been toilets so we spent a lot of time overcoming this. Everything was fine to begin with, however after a minor misunderstanding with another pupil, their elder brother got his friends to lock me in the toilets undoing all the work which the SENCO had done. The LSC (learning support centre) got dubbed by bullies as the ‘little spastic centre’ and the toilets close by it were often frequented with bullies who would look over the top of the cubicle while you were using the toilet. In the summer term my parents couldn't find me black sandals with a hard back (which I needed as my feet roll over due to lax ligaments, poor muscle tone and hemiplegia), so they bought me very dark navy sandals and put on black shoe polish. The teachers did not notice until the bullies drew their attention to it. I became extremely miserable, I didn't have friends and was so lonely. The Maths teacher told me long division was past me.</image:caption>

      <image:title>My story - Travelling the world</image:title>
<image:caption>I loved my first trip to the USA. It was both scary and exhilarating. I learnt a great deal. I am constantly surprised by just how many different ways there are to experience being a Autistic person and the different attitudes, beliefs and approaches there are around the world. I continue to build my training career as I wanted people to have better experiences than I had, and I continued to learn about others.</image:caption>

      <image:title>My story - Starting school</image:title>
<image:caption>I loved primary school. I was in the area special needs unit because I had 7 disabilities already identified. The teachers were very kind and understanding in my class. However when I was put into mainstream classes the teachers often struggled to teach me. My Mum told the school that I wouldn't manage a full day to begin with. Sure enough they had to ring my Mum at lunch time as I was asleep. When I was 8, I moved to the junior special needs class. My teacher at the time noticed that whilst I didn't have as noticeable behaviours as some of my class mates (e.g. biting others arms, smearing poo etc.), I seemed to really struggle with the transition. My teacher, Mrs Westrop, asked my Mum if she thought I was Autistic. My Mum agreed and this started the diagnostic process. It took 3 years to get my Asperger's diagnosis. I did year 6 twice as it was felt this would give me more time to mature. However they tried to mainstream me, but the teacher and the other children did not want me. After a incident of being told off after being tricked by my classmates, the teacher never had me in her class again.</image:caption>

      <image:title>My story - College</image:title>
<image:caption>I got kicked out of school. (Technically my parents were given a strong message that I would no longer be tolerated). I went to 3 colleges as I learnt after 2 terms that when I worked hard I could get good grades (which did not happen at school). I started on a GNVQ IT course, then went on to a technical IT course, then a retail course then an art and design course. Each time I built on the skills I had learnt on the previous course. However, in my second college I was still bullied. But I was given the opportunity to join a social group of other Autistic students. As a group we had many similar problems. We all said having training for staff and a safe space we could go would be important improvements. I and 2 other students started teaching the teachers about Autism. I really understood at this point that if I helped non Autistic people understand Autistic people, then non Autistic people could help me understand non Autistic people. This meant I could alter my behaviour to avoid being bullied.</image:caption>

      <image:title>My story - Birth</image:title>
<image:caption>I was born at 28 weeks which means I was born 3 months too early. I spent almost 3 months in hospital when I was first born, and my parents made the 60 mile round trip every day to come and visit me. My Mum says the nurses described my condition as "touch and go" and they had to resuscitate me several times. The photograph on the left of this text is me at 12 hours old. When I came home my parents very early on noticed that I did not respond like other babies. I didn't snuggle against my Mum and would pull away. My parents are both animal lovers and good at understanding non-verbal communication so the lack of speech when I was a little older did not bother them as I would communicate in many other ways. My Mum decided to try as many different things as she could to engage me, very early on she found I responded to music and she would play the guitar and sing to me.</image:caption>

      <image:title>My story - Next High School</image:title>
<image:caption>My parents decided to move me to another school. The bullying was a bit better, although I was still called a spastic a retard and a freak, I had very low self esteem and didn't get good grades. When I look back on this time I see that I needed a different environment. I was overwhelmed and was not learning anything. One person who really helped me was the IT teacher. He did 3 things which made a difference: 1. listened to me, and let me know he was listening in a meaningful way. 2. Gave me clear boundaries like a 3 a day question limit. 3. Gave me a place in the community by involving me in the website and a open evening.</image:caption>

      <image:title>My story - University</image:title>
<image:caption>When I was at school I thought that I would be homeless and a drug addict by the time I was 21. When I was 21 I started my only year so far at university. I studied creative online design at Anglia Ruskin University. I got good grades (3 A's 4 B's and 1 C ), but I took a sabbatical to focus on my autism work, which had built up over the year. I had started mentoring young people, and also started volunteering with the NAS (National Autistic Society) which led me to be on Channel 4 news. This in turn led me to a opportunity to apply to the Charlie Bayne Travel Trust which gave me £600 for my first trip to the United States of America to visit UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles).</image:caption>

<image:title>kidspage - Life can be hard as a autistic person but it’s not all bad news</image:title>
<image:caption>When I was younger sometimes I thought that because I was Autistic I wouldn’t be able to do things like other people, I was worried I would be a failure. But now that I am older I can see that I have to use my skills to be successful, and it’s ok if my skills are not the same as non autistic people or other autistic people. Non autistic people are often good at seeing ‘the bigger picture.’ This is a phrase that means being able to process (think) about lots of information at once. For example, in the photo there is a girl with a cake most non autistic people would think that this is a birthday party photo, whereas many autistic people who think in detail might be thinking about how many stripes the are, how many stars etc. The world needs both big picture and detail thinkers. For example, many autistic people do jobs that require them to notice small details such as software testing, or detailed artwork.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5980b718f14aa1e9bb9cede4/1543953886704-70J5CMTEVVEA57UX1YOZ/image-asset.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>kidspage - Social capital</image:title>
<image:caption>Social capital is when people trust you or believe you meant to do the right thing. So if you make a social mistake, they are more likely to forgive you. Sometimes non autistic people like to do things that you may think are pointless, but try to remember they think differently to autistic people. Non autistic people often do something called ‘small talk’. This is when people talk about things that are not important to them like the weather, tv shows etc. to get everyone used to each other, or make people feel that they want to talk to them and be nice. By doing small talk you are gaining social capital and this will help you in the future. Sometimes we all have to do things we don’t enjoy. When you know someone better you may be able to skip the small talk</image:caption>

      <image:title>kidspage - What is Capital?</image:title>
<image:caption>Capital is a word that is sometimes used to mean when you have something of value e.g. money that you are saving for when you need it. So for example from time to time everyone drops a plate or glass and it breaks. If you have capital you can just buy another plate or glass to replace the one which broke.</image:caption>

<image:title>kidspage - You can be happy on your own, or with friends</image:title>
<image:caption>Some autistic people find being around people really tiring and need lots of time by themselves. Some autistic people like to have friends and other autistic people prefer their own company all the time. It is ok to like to be by yourself, but sometimes people do this to protect themselves from bullying and they are actually quite lonely. There are lots of ways to help you get through this situation. You don’t have to be lonely. I did not have many friends till I was in my early 20’s and met people who were into music. I gained social capital because I was good at music and full of ideas. This helped me when I made social mistakes.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When I was a kid I loved toy cars, making up stories, drawing and music. I played long games of cars in traffic jams. I also loved my cuddly toys and playing cafes and shops with them, but as I grew older and went into high school sometimes my interests were more like that of a younger child, and this made me feel a bit embarrassed. I couldn’t see that in fact many non autistic kids will try to copy their peers to fit in because they don’t want to stand out, this is a way of earning something I call social capital.</image:caption>

      <image:title>kidspage - The future</image:title>
<image:caption>You can do anything you want to do. Many autistic people have jobs, are married, and have kids and grandkids.</image:caption>

      <image:title>kidspage - You CAN do things!</image:title>
<image:caption>Autism should never be a reason to say you can’t do something, you just do it differently. To the left of this text is a photo of one of my favorite places in the world, Santa Monica in California, USA. When I was in school I never believed I could achieve the things I wanted to do in life. (Travel was something I wanted to do when I grew up), but I am lucky to have seen a lot of the world. One thing that helped me was having people around me who believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself.</image:caption>

<image:title>kidspage - It’s ok if you dress different to other people</image:title>
<image:caption>I hated non uniform day, activity days, anything that involve bonding with my age group on things other people my age were typically interested in. I always felt un-cool, but people regularly comment on my dress sense, and of course my hat and glasses have become my trade mark.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I met Robyn through mutual friends. I started to teach her Kodály musicianship, she found it quite slow. When she got bored one or other of us would suggest that we jam together. Gradually the jams took over and we started playing gigs together. Kathy used to play with the Honkies, the Smartbombs and the C-siders. She also plays in a trio with Michael Roberts and Karina Townsend: The Department of Internal Affairs.</image:caption>

<image:title>Research - safety for women on the Autism spectrum</image:title>
<image:caption>I wanted to understand how Autistic and Non Autistic might differ in terms of being able to keep themselves safe in everyday life. With my editor lisa clark (from Jessica Kingsley publishers) I compiled a list of situations that most people encounter that could present risks e.g. friends, relationships, emotions, sex etc. I then made a list of questions to try and understand people’s experience and this is what informed my first book, ‘The Independent Woman’s Handbook for Super Safe Living on the Autistic Spectrum’. As a example of things I learned, Autistic women were more likely to be manipulated by other people, but Non-Autistic people were more likely to lose money.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Research - Stimming!</image:title>
<image:caption>Stimming is the autism community word for what professionals sometimes call repetitive routine behaviours, basically it’s something you do over and over again with your body. This could be flicking your hair, flapping, spinning round in circles or rocking. I wanted to find out other Autistic people’s experiences so I asked 100 Autistic people. This is what I learnt from that group. 102 different stims (meaning that a lot of people did more than one stim) The top 3 reasons for stimming were to: 1. Calm down 2. Manage sensory input 3. Reduce anxiety (There were lots of other reasons which could be around positive emotions too). 50% of people said they liked to stim 30% of people said they liked to stim sometimes 72% of people had been told not to stim at some point in their life.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Research - Meltdowns</image:title>
<image:caption>A meltdown is not the same as a tantrum. It is when a person becomes completely overwhelmed and is unable to function in a environment. Sometimes the behaviour of a person who is experiencing a meltdown can look like they are having a tantrum (shouting, kicking, throwing furniture, etc.) but unlike a tantrum, giving in will not help. People can also have shutdowns which is caused by being overwhelmed but causes a person to retreat (getting under a table or pulling their jumper over their face for example) I asked autistic people about their experiences of meltdowns. Many people talked about how ashamed it made them feel afterwards despite the fact that they had no control over the meltdown.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Research - Periods</image:title>
<image:caption>I wanted to understand the different experiences between Autistic and Non Autistic people who have periods. There is lots of diversity in experience in the Non Autistic population e.g. not everyone experiences pain, but what is more difficult for autistic people? I found sensory issues and executive functioning to be key issues for consideration when putting support in place as well as clear information with correct terminology for body parts and body functions. This research is what guided me when writing ‘The Autism Friendly Guide to Periods’.</image:caption>
