Mentoring
Mentoring is when someone who is older or has experience in a particular area of life supports someone who is less experienced or younger . The person being supported is called the Mentee the person providing is called the Mentor.
When I was at University I had the privilege of mentoring a young man in a special school. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience; I learnt a lot about the importance of other people's needs and about the special school system, and what it means to become a young adult with a disability which isn’t only medical but is also social.
Because of this experience, I started working as a mentor professionally. I have completed an Introduction to Counselling course at the City Lit in London, and have also experienced various therapies myself.
I am now studying psychology with the Open University to further my knowledge,as well as attending regular conferences and being part of a steering group for a non drug talking group therapy for people with ASD's at the UEA ( University fi East Anglia) where I am also a member of the select sub committee for the psychology doctorate.I keep up to date also by reading journals and magazines.
However, mentoring is not therapy. The above experiences simply help me do my job better, by informing the way I speak and interact with client, and giving me a broad range of strategies I can recommend .
I have a very big interest in working with young people 16+years old, going through the transition into adulthood. I feel that this is a very confusing time in a young person's life, but with the correct support, it is the time when a young person can start to make their dreams reality, as I have done. However, I am happy to work with older and younger clients; please email me for more details.
Most clients see me once a week for an hour, and the primary objective is to give them space to talk about how they are feeling and to provide support from someone else on the Spectrum who can help them talk about it and also can help arrange college visits and liaise with support staff. I am currently based in London. I prefer to see clients face to face, but I am working with clients at a distance via Skype.
